Assamese Nightingale Dipali Borthakur no more

Legendary singer of Assam Padmashri Dipali Borthakur passed away on Friday at 78.

Popularly known as the “Nightingale of Assam”, Borthakur was ailing for quite some time over the last few years.

Born on January 30 in the year 1941 at Sivasagar in eastern Assam, Borthakur had given her ethereal voice to a few evergreen tunes including Sonor Kharu Nalage Mok, Kon Man Boroshire Chip, Samay Pale Amar Phale Ebar Ahi Jaba that has made the Assamese music industry all the more extravagant.

The legendary was also awarded Silipi Bota in 2010 by Assam Government and Aideu Handique Silpi Award in 2012 by the Sadou Asom Lekhika Somaroh Samiti.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of the iconic singer. Modi tweeted, “With the passing away of Dipali Barthakur Ji, we have lost an outstanding singer who made Assamese music and culture even more popular across India and the world. Her melodious songs will continue to enthral generations to come. Condolences to her family and countless admirers.”
